Psalm 130
I. Call to Worship:  Psalm 116:5-7
II. Offering passage:  2 Cor. 9:12-15
III. Scripture references:
  • Ps. 69:1,2 - ‘Save me, O God, For the waters have threatened my life. I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me.’
  • Rom. 3:10-12  - “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.”
  • Rom. 5:8  - “But God …  demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
  • Eph. 2:4,5 – “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)”
  • Ps 103:12 – “As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
  • 2 Cor. 5:21  - “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

IV. Quotes:
  • Derek Kidner - ‘at the end there is encouragement for the many from the experience of the One’
  • Spurgeon - ‘perhaps the sweet singer would never have found that precious thing had he not been cast into the depths’
  • John Owen  - ‘he cries out under the weight and waves of his sins … desiring to be delivered from these depths out of which he cried, he deals with God wholly about mercy and forgiveness; and it is sin alone from which forgiveness is a deliverance. This doctrine also that he preached upon his delivery is that of mercy, grace and redemption, as is manifest from the close of the psalm … sin is the disease, affliction only a symptom of it’
  • Martin Luther, the first of the 95 Theses  - “When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ     said, ‘Repent,’ he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.”
  • Spurgeon - ‘The waiting itself is beneficial to us: it tries faith, exercises patience, trains submission, and endears the blessing when it comes … Waiting, we study the word, believe the word, hope in the word, and live on the word; and all because it is "his word, "--the word of him who never speaks in vain. (YHWH’s) word is a firm ground for a waiting soul to rest upon.’
