Psalm 119:129-144
I. Call to Worship:  Psalm 70:4,5
II. Offering passage:  Matt. 6:19-21
III. Scripture references:
  • Ps. 81:10 – “Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.”
  • John 7:37 - “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.”
  • Matt. 11:28 - “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”
  • Num. 6:24-26 – “The LORD bless you, and keep you; The LORD make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.”
  • II Cor. 5:31 – “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our     behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

IV. Quotes:
  • Spurgeon (God’s Word is)  - ‘full of wonderful revelations, commands and promises. Wonderful in their nature, as being free from all error, and bearing within themselves overwhelming self-evidence of their truth; wonderful in their effects as instructing, elevating,     strengthening, and comforting the soul. Jesus the eternal Word is called Wonderful, and all the uttered words of God are wonderful in their degree. Those who know them best wonder at them most. It is wonderful that God should have borne testimony at all to sinful men, and more wonderful still that his testimony should be of such a character, so clear, so full, so gracious, so mighty.’

  • Luther – ‘when Your Word is revealed it gives light’
  • David Mathis  - ‘the love of God rescues us from the wrath of God, without compromising the justice of God, to the glory of God’
  • Matthew Henry - ‘the sins of sinners … are the sorrows of saints’
  • D.A. Carson  - ‘however uncivil our society     becomes, we must never be angry     people, but broken people living under the cross’
  • John Piper - ‘God-glorifying faith is a future oriented confidence in God’s integrity and power and wisdom to follow through on all His promises’
V. Notes:
  • “And Can It Be”
He left His Father’s throne above
(so free, so infinite His grace!)
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race.
Tis mercy all, immense and free
For, O my God, it found out me.
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

Psalm 119:113-128
I. Call to Worship:  Psalm 63:5-8
II. Offering passage:  2 Cor. 9:7,8
III. Scripture references:
  • Eph. 4:1 – “Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called”
  • Ps 84:11 – “… No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
  • I John 1:7 - ‘but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the     Light, we have fellowship with one another’
  • Micah 6:8 – ‘He has told     you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?’
  • I Kings 18:21 - ‘how long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him’
  • James 1:7,8      - “For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

IV. Quotes:
  • Alexander Maclaren  - ‘this section is mainly the expression of firm resolve to cleave to the Law … (vv. 113-115) breath love and determination … (vv. 116-117) pass into prayer in view of the psalmist’s weakness and the strength of temptation … (vv. 118-120) the fate of the despisers of the Law intensifies the psalmist’s clinging grasp of awe-struck love’

  • R.C. Sproul – “Only once in sacred Scripture is an attribute of God elevated to the third degree. Only once is a characteristic of God mentioned three times in succession. The Bible says that God is holy, holy, holy. Not that He is merely holy, or even holy, holy. He is holy, holy, holy. The Bible never says that God is love, love, love; or mercy, mercy, mercy; or wrath, wrath, wrath; or justice, justice, justice. It does say that he is holy, holy, holy that the whole earth is full of His glory.”
V. Cross-references:
  • 2 Timothy 3:1-4, 5, 14
