Points of Interest
Psalm 130
I. Call to Worship:  Psalm 116:5-7
II. Offering passage:  2 Cor. 9:12-15
III. Scripture references:
  • Ps. 69:1,2 - ‘Save me, O God, For the waters have threatened my life. I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me.’
  • Rom. 3:10-12  - “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.”
  • Rom. 5:8  - “But God …  demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
  • Eph. 2:4,5 – “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)”
  • Ps 103:12 – “As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
  • 2 Cor. 5:21  - “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

IV. Quotes:
  • Derek Kidner - ‘at the end there is encouragement for the many from the experience of the One’
  • Spurgeon - ‘perhaps the sweet singer would never have found that precious thing had he not been cast into the depths’
  • John Owen  - ‘he cries out under the weight and waves of his sins … desiring to be delivered from these depths out of which he cried, he deals with God wholly about mercy and forgiveness; and it is sin alone from which forgiveness is a deliverance. This doctrine also that he preached upon his delivery is that of mercy, grace and redemption, as is manifest from the close of the psalm … sin is the disease, affliction only a symptom of it’
  • Martin Luther, the first of the 95 Theses  - “When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ     said, ‘Repent,’ he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.”
  • Spurgeon - ‘The waiting itself is beneficial to us: it tries faith, exercises patience, trains submission, and endears the blessing when it comes … Waiting, we study the word, believe the word, hope in the word, and live on the word; and all because it is "his word, "--the word of him who never speaks in vain. (YHWH’s) word is a firm ground for a waiting soul to rest upon.’

Psalm 129
I. Call to Worship:  Psalm 111

III. Scripture references:
  • Hosea 11:1 – “When Israel was a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.”
  • Is. 53:5,6 – “But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.”
  • Rom. 8:37 – “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.”
  • I Corinthians 15:57 – “but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our     Lord Jesus Christ.”
  • I Corinthians 15:58 - “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is     not in vain in the Lord.”
IV. Quotes:
  • Derek Kidner writes, ‘whereas most nations tend to look back on what they have achieved, Israel reflects here on what she has survived’
  • Spurgeon - ‘if this be an imprecation (curse), let it stand; for our heart says “Amen” to it. It is but justice that those who hate, harass and hurt the good should be brought to nought. Those who confound right and wrong ought to be confounded, and those who turn back from God ought to be turned back … how can we wish prosperity to those who would destroy that which is dearest to our hearts? This present age is so flippant that if a man loves the Saviour he is styled a fanatic, and if he hates the powers of evil he is named a bigot.’
V. Cross-references:
  • 2 Corinthians 4:7-11

Points of Interest
Psalm 127
I. Call to Worship:  Psalm 107:1-3
II. Offering passage:  I Chron. 29:9-14
III. Scripture references:
  • Prov. 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
  • Deut. 6:6 – “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. ‘You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when     you lie down and when you rise up.”’
IV. Notes:
  • Nisi Dominus Frustra – ‘without the LORD, frustration’

V. Quotes:
  • Benjamin Franklin - “In the beginning of the Contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily prayer in this room for the divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, & they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending providence in our favour. To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace     on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth- that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without     his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been     assured, Sir, in the sacred writings, that "except the Lord build the House they     labour in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better, than the Builders of Babel …”
  • Iain Duncan Smith (the Work and Pensions Secretary in the UK) “Children from broken homes are nine times more likely to commit crimes than those from stable families … the breakdown of marriage had led to the fracturing of society, as well as addiction, crime and lost productivity and tax revenues that, in all, cost Britain around £100 billion a year”
  • Spurgeon  – ‘where society is rightly ordered, children are regarded, not as an encumbrance, but as an inheritance; and they are received, not with regret, but as a reward’
