Psalm 119:145-152
I. Call to Worship:  Psalm 71:14-16
II. Offering passage:  Phil. 4:18
III. Scripture references:
  • 2 Tim. 1:9 – “who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity”
  • Eph. 1:4 – “just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world …’
  • Rom. 8:38,39 – “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
  • Eph. 1:7 – “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace”
  • 2 Cor. 5:21 – “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
  • 2 Cor. 5:17 – “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”
  • Phil. 4:19 – “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

IV. Quotes:
  • Derek Kidner  – ‘the threat is not glossed over; it is put in perspective by a bigger fact.’
  • John Bunyan – ‘in prayer, it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart’
  • Spurgeon - ‘he who rushes from his bed to his business and waits not to worship is as foolish as though he had not put on his clothes or cleansed his face and as unwise as though he dashed into battle without arms or armour. Be it ours to bathe in the softly flowing river of communion with God, before the heat of the wilderness and the burden of the way begin to oppress us.’

  • John Piper – ‘open the Bible, start reading it, and pause at every verse and turn it into a prayer’
V. Notes:
  • Prayer is to be:
    1. fervent
    2. frequent
    3. informed by the Word
    4. Biblical – praying His Word
    5. in faith

  • How Firm a Foundation
How firm a foundation, you saints of the LORD … is laid for your faith     in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He has said … to you who for         refuge to Jesus have fled?
Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed … for I AM                 your God and will give you aid.
