Hebrews 2:11-18
I. Call to Worship:  Psalm 16:11
II. Offering passage:   2 Cor. 9:12-15
III. Scripture references:
  • Heb. 10:10 – “we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all”
  • Heb. 10:14 tells us – “for by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified”
  • 2 Cor. 5:21 - “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
  • Col. 2:10 – ‘in Him (we) have been made complete’
  • 2 Peter 1:4 - ‘… you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.’
  • 2 Cor. 4:4 tells us – ‘the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.’
  • Heb. 9:27 – “And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment”

  • Heb. 2:17,18 - (NLT) ‘it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.’
  • Heb. 4:15 (NLT) – “This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.”
  • Rom. 3:24,25 - ‘being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood …’
IV. Notes:
  • Heidelberg Catechism question #1 asks: What is your only comfort in life and in death?
Answer: That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ, who with His precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and redeemed me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that all things must work together for my salvation. Wherefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready from now onto live unto Him.
